The town park is within walking distance of the old town centre. It contains a disused open-air swimming bath which has now been refurbished as a bistro ("Parkbad Süd") and cultural centre. The old bath itself has now been changed into an open-air stage venue, and there is a "boules" area next door on the site. You can borrow "boules" free of charge in the bistro.

CATHEDRAL OF HERESIES
A theatrical lie

"And Pilate said to him, What is truth?" (John XIX, 38)

A town in north Italy, shortly before Christmas. Maria Magdalena Rossi, a professional restorer and cynical unbeliever, is working on the ceiling of the cathedral chapel, trying to uncover a fresco (of the Virgin Mary?) which has been painted over for centuries. Above the altar in the chapel is another relic, the so-called Shroud of Christ. The Roman Catholic Church has sent away fragments of the Shroud to be examined by experts, in the hope of being able to prove its authenticity and thereby to strengthen doctrinal teachings on the death and resurrection of Christ. But the local Cardinal has other more urgent problems. One of his most talented former students, a highly popular priest and theologian by the name of Professor Marco Albertini, is not only propagating a more “mythical” approach to the interpretation of the New Testament, but is about to publish a further critical book about the cult of the Holy Virgin and religious perversion in the Catholic Church. Cardinal Concenti's closest and oldest confidant, Bishop Borromeo, demands that the Cardinal take strong disciplinary measures to prevent Albertini damaging the reputation of the Church any further.

One of Albertini's visiting students at the local seminary is a young Irishman by the name of John O'Malley. He gets wind of the bishop's stance and tries to warn the Professor. On the day the book is published, Albertini not only receives a series of threatening telephone calls, but is also summoned to appear before the Cardinal. The results of the examination on the Shroud arrive on the Cardinal's desk on the day of the appointment. In one respect they fulfil the hopes of the Cardinal and the Bishop completely. At the same time they reveal a truth which threatens to destroy the Christian faith completely. Suddenly it is vital to keep the results secret. There is only one problem: Albertini of all people is suspected of having discovered the secret…

In the meantime Signora Rossi has uncovered the fresco, and with it a very uncomfortable truth that supports many of the facts published in Albertini's latest book. When she hears that the Cardinal has taken steps to suspend Albertini from his teaching post and ban him from preaching any longer, she intervenes personally. Her meeting with the Cardinal proves to be traumatic for both parties, because she confronts him with a personal truth which he has kept secret for years. Worse still she threatens to make the secret public and destroy his reputation and career, unless the Cardinal rescinds the measures he has taken against Albertini. Concenti's reaction is terrifying, not only for himself but also for others.

Bishop Borromeo is sent to cross question John O'Malley about how much Albertini might have told him. Tensions escalate, and during the interview the Bishop abuses his powers of authority.

On one of his regular evening jogs through a city park, Albertini is waylaid by two mafia-type thugs who attempt to rob him, and throw him in the freezing lake.

On a cold, snowy Christmas morning the cathedral lies in ashes as the result of a catastrophic fire. Lies and truth appear to be buried for all time in the ruins of the building. John O'Malley's faith seems to have been destroyed, but a glimmer of hope comes from an unexpected side…

As with all art, Cathedral of Heresies is a lie. And as with all art, the lie exists to illuminate some truth or other. Since the play is not without its humorous aspects I was tempted to call it a divine comedy. But others might find it a piece of profane blasphemy. For what is divine and what is comic are deeply subjective matters. In the end God only laughs in the way we expect him to.

KATHEDRALE DES IRRGLAUBENS
(Cathedral of Heresies)
Eine theatralische Lüge
Stück in 2 Akten

"Pilatus sagte zu ihm, Was ist Wahrheit?" (Johannes XIX, 38)
